The 41 Israeli athletes Olympic team competed in 10 different sports in the 2010 Beijing summer Olympics. Israel started participating in the Olympics in 1952. Among the athletes in 2010: Arik Ze'evi, Udi Gal and Gideon Kliger, world and European medalists in sailing. Shahar Tzuberi, European medalist in sailboard, and tennis men's double-team Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, winners of the 2008 Australian Open. Israel national basketball team participated in the 36th EuroBasket which is a basketball championship for the European nations and it is held by FIBA Europe. The Israeli national team has participated 23 times in EuroBasket winning a silver medal in Eurobasket 1979, and was in 5th place in 1953 and 1977. Israel finished equal 9th at Eurobasket 2007, and is currently ranked 23rd in the world by FIBA, and 12th in Europe. Maccabi Tel Aviv dominates the domestic league and is among the top teams in Europe. Maccabi Tel Aviv has won the European championship 5 times, in 1977, 1981, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
