Ben Gurion International Airport is the largest international airport in Israel. It is located near Lod, 15km (9 mi) southeast of Tel Aviv. In 2008, 11,081,213 international passengers arrived through Ben Gurion aboard 82,649 flights. The domestic tourism also flourished in 2008, with 469,220 passengers flying on 11,995 aircrafts.
The airport went through a couple of name changes. In 1936, it was built as Lydda Airport in Palestine during the British Mandate. It played an important role during World War II when it served as a major base for military air transport. On 14 May 1948, after the state of Israel was declared, the airport's name was changed to Lod. In 1973 the name changed to Ben Gurion International Airport to honor Israel's first prime minister David Ben-Gurion.
Ben Gurion Int'l Airport serves as the home base of El Al, Israir Airlines, Arkia Israel Airlines, and Sun d'Or International Airlines.
Ben Gurion Int'l Airport is one of the world's most secure airports, with a security force that includes both police officers and IDF soldiers.
